A recent article on WebMD points out that family who eat dinner together, will commonly eat healthier. Studies have shown that families who eat together will eat more vegetables and fruits. According to the article, "they also tend to eat less fried foods, soda..." More information with the following link.
Soda is definately a hot topic for lots of families. I was alergic to food dyes and all the rainbow of sodas were forbidden to me since it was trigger for my A.D.D [attention deficit disorder. Sprite and 7-UP were my only choices as a child. The alternative was juices and "ade" drinks. But the ammount of sugars, both refined and from fruits, in those types of drinks is sometimes more than soda. For other families it was cost..Today an average cost of 2 bottles of namebrand soda a day for family of 5 equals 730.00 or more per year. Drink water with a twist of lemon in it. It is better and has flavor.

I wouldn't immediately attribute the healthier eating to family. Eating alone is the likely negative influence. When you prepare food for multiple people (friends, coworkers, whomever) you're likely to design a well balanced meal.

When I was growing up I recall eating at home alot. It was pretty rare that I seemed to eat out. I am a generally thin guy. Since getting older, my habits have grown towards the fast foods which in itself will cause you to gain weight. With my wife pregnant we have tried to cook in which will hopefully help our health as well as the health of our child-to-be.
