5 Halloween ideas for your newborn

Written on October 28, 2005 by Kevin.

Pumpkin carving and trick or treating are great but, for my newborn son, that just wont fly this year. I have gone on a hunt trying to think of things that we can do with my son to celebrate the holiday. While there are very few ways to celebrate a holiday with a newborn, here are 5 ideas that I have come up with.

  • Dress him up in a Halloween costume and take hundreds of pictures.
  • Let him taste what pumpkin is like and again take hundreds of pictures.
  • Show him a scary monster face and watch as his eyes get huge.
  • Take a picture of your newborn next to a pumpkin. Do the same thing next year and see how much they have grown.
  • Take more pictures of your newborn dressed up in costume.

People wiser than myself say having a child lets you experience the fun of childhood again. These first few years with your baby are your last chance to make a grab for Halloween loot.

Door-to-door trick-or-treating in your neighborhood is perhaps too overt. Go to a downtown retail district which holds a trick-or-treating event. The candy is probably dispensed from the doorsteps, so you just walk along the sidewalk and harvest your candy crop.

People will not say, "Your baby is too young for candy." No, no, no. They will say, "Oh, what an adorable baby! What a cute costume! Here's a Kit Kat." If they think themselves particularly clever, they will give you a Baby Ruth.

    Cherish these early years.

I took my daughter door to door which was difficult to say the least. The whole strange neighborhood (at her grandma's), night time and people popping out of thir front doors all freaked her out. My husband wasn't with us and my camera battery door is broke due to too many drops, so pictures were hard to come by...but gosh darnit I got some...since she slept through the 1st halloween. Next year I'm dragging my husband along so we can get more or not.

I suggest that people also might want a video camera (those new 30 minute ones at Walgreens or a high tech night vision one or simply a digital cam with video capability) to capture all the halloween fun.
